Attention has turned towards pure, unadulterated luxury in the beauty department this year. Call it quiet luxury, or simply a desire to look more polished, we’re collectively seeking out a more refined and intentional aesthetic. Exhibit A: Hailey Bieber’s lustrous new lengths.
After swapping her blunt-cut bob – one of 2023’s most popular hairstyles – for a bouncy, mid-length style, Bieber posed in a video clip posted to her hairstylist, Priscilla Valles’s, Instagram. Glossy and healthy, Hailey’s new look was the epitome of expensive hair and featured big barrelled – but relatively subtle – waves through the ends. Where once she would have been all about a beachy, cool-girl finish, the emphasis here was on luxe shine.
Margot Robbie, meanwhile, attended the traditional luncheon for Oscar nominees on Monday with her hair styled in enviable waves. Paired with her prim and proper Chanel tweed skirt-suit, Margot’s expensive-looking curls could not have appeared more luxurious. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is another advocate of the look, frequently opting for sleek, flyaway-free styles for day and night.
Keen to recreate the look? Hairstylist Larry King applies a hair mousse – his My Nanna’s Mousse is brilliant – through mid-lengths and ends, then blasts it off using a hair dryer and round brush. “Curl the hair around the brush, then settle it and pull the brush out so the hair falls into big, loose waves,” he says. “Another way to do it is with the Dyson Airwrap – use the bigger barrel, so you don’t get too much root lift.”
After that, all you need to do is pull your fingers through the hair and tame any flyaways with a good hair moisturising cream, and you’re good to go. Expensive, understated hair couldn’t be easier.
